CamTESOL is a conference for professionals in the field of English Language Teaching and related issues. The first CamTESOL conference was in 2005 on the theme of "Practical Issues in Teaching". This focus on the practice of ELT has continued. CamTESOL is one of the largest professional development conference in the Asia Pacific region with an average audience of 1,700 attending annually (over 600 of whom are international participants from more than 30 countries). The organizer is Cambodia Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CamTESOL) based at the Cambodian Institute of Technology (ITC), Phnom Penh. This event is also sponsored by IDP International, the co-owner of IELTS.
On February 7, The Synesthetes project had the opportunity to introduce the project to speakers around the world at the above conference. This year, because the COVID epidemic was complicated, CamTESOL was organized online. At the conference, the project presented the results of the English class over the past 2 year, especially the achievements of the project when testing the hypothesis of effective peer-teaching & peer-learning methods. better than the extra classes there is a huge age difference between teacher & student.
The course lasted 3 months (from September to December) with the participation of 72 middle and high school students from Northern provinces. At the end of the experiment, The Synesthetes collected data from students' opinions, comments, comments and suggestions so that the project can find the most suitable approach to apply this method. effectively. The project focuses on Listening and Speaking skills as teachers will instruct teachers in Reading and Writing more at school. The data from the survey shows the correctness in the teaching and learning organization of The Synesthetes, in particular:
Over 40% said that they had a very good experience with the class (level 5) and 30% achieved level 4 (on a scale of 5).
67% think they have improved in Listening and Speaking and approximately 50% were inspired to invest more in English.
79.5% of students feel comfortable being taught by a teacher of the same age and 53.4% say that the teacher has done their job well.
Before starting this class, the project had a small test to test the students' level: 38.6% A1, 32.9% A2, 28.6% B1 (based on CEFR ). The teachers of the class are all students with 7.0 IELTS or higher corresponding to C1 / C2. Therefore, the project can guarantee that it will be difficult to lack expertise in the classroom.
The CamTESOL conference that the project participated in went extremely smoothly and The Synesthetes received a lot of support. Hope that the community will accompany our project to popularize English to many students in more difficult areas.
