Although being taught at all grades from primary school to high school in Vietnam, civics education is not often considered as a major subject compared to mathematics or literature. In this post, we are going to take another look at this subject and point out its importance.

First of all, civics education is actually designed to shape and construct an ideal behavior for each civilian. Have you ever noticed the questions asked are based on the situations that any of us could face at any time? Have you ever wondered what to do if your desk-mate at school is actually cheating during the exam? Are you going to leave it or take drastic actions such as calling out the cheater in the middle of the room? It is not just about doing the right thing, but it is also about doing the right thing while making others realizing their mistakes and not having any hatred towards you. By the end, the purpose of this boring subject is to get you prepared and guide you to the best decision in any circumstance.

Secondly, civics education provides brief knowledge of the law. The funny thing is you are not likely to think about the laws that you must abide by unless those laws are being presented to you at school. Every citizen must have a certain level of knowledge about the rights and obligations in order to avoid getting into legal troubles. The information written in your textbooks might not be that appealing but the importance of those laws should not be neglected.

In conclusion, civics education is relevant for our lives and its power is underestimated. Thus, the subject needs to adapt a new way of approaching its problems to reach the purpose it has been set for.
